The Big Weekend

The Big Weekend is a celebration of community music making at its best. Over 120 musicians from Birdsville to Karumba, Julia Creek to Barkly come together every two years to form a massed community all-ages symphonic orchestra. Three days of intensive rehearsals, tutorials and instrumental workshops culminate in a concert performance at the Mt Isa Civic Centre.

To celebrate the 2009 get-together, the Mt Isa Community Orchestra has commissioned a new work by Ralph Hultgren, one of Queensland’s most experienced composers for community ensembles.

This exciting new work entitled Wide Brown Land reflects the beauty and mystery of Mount Isa and surrounds. This piece will be premiered at the finale concert of The Big Weekend.
