Ross McLennan

The demise of Snout, the great Australian band which Ross McLennan had led for 10 years, was marked with sadness and a certain amount of celebration on November 8, 2002. The packed out Snout farewell gig had the air of a rambunctious wake.

One of Australia’s most underrated songwriters, Ross McLennan put some interesting twists on guitar pop classicism. On his solo debut, 2003’s ‘Songs from the Brittle Building’, McLennan’s vocal melodies stand proudly out front with plenty of charisma and the warming, reassuring tone of an organ or bass is never far away.

In 2008, Ross released his newest work, ‘Sympathy for the New World’ which proved an unlikely gem. Weaving a spellbinding course through stripped-down folk, eerie psychedelia and obscure vocal imagery, it saw the Melbourne songsmith craft something as beautiful, a truly unhinged and unpredictable composition.
