Damian Barbeler
Damian Barbeler is a composer whose catalogue of works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, electronic music and theatre demonstrate his versatility and creative range. Early experiences as a composer and performer in Brisbane’s thriving alternative theatre and experimental music scene have given him an adventurous approach to conventional forces.
This has led to recent explorations described as Industrial Romantic, where music derived from ultra dirty, grainy sonorities somehow manages to express intimacy and emotional complexity. He has twice been awarded Recommended Work at the International Rostrum of Composers and was a finalist in the prestigious Takemitsu Prize.
In May 2008, his work ‘God in the Machine’ was premiered in the finals of the Toru Takemitsu Prize in Tokyo, where adjudicator Steve Reich described Barbeler's work as 'master orchestration'.
